This was probably the most unique WB project ever for us, because we started first with building funding for the house over the Winter of 2010 via a new "virtual" online application cleverly developed by Tipping Point Media.

This summer, our fundraising teams will reap the rewards of their efforts by joining us for building onsite, which will include lunch and t-shirts. The home is being be built at 278 Campbell St. near City School #17 in the JOSANA neighborhood. Located near Rhinos stadium, Flower City Habitat has made a multi-year commitment to rebuilding this 24-block area. We hope to bring about a re-birth in this troubled neighborhood plagued by poverty, crime and hopelessness. Since Fall 2007, we have completed 16 homes there.

Fundraising Teams

In order to raise the $79,000 needed for building materials, tools, insurance and staff supervision, our Women Build teams created a virtual house by asking friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor them. Women from all around Rochester got involved and had a blast!

While Lowe's is a partial sponsor for Women Build projects nationwide and our Women Build fundraising teams will do the heavy lifting, additional donations will help us reach the $79,000 needed to cover the cost of building materials, tools, insurance and staff supervision. While virtually all of the labor to build our homes is volunteer, donations of cash, in-kind services and materials are still needed.

The National Program

The Women Build program was established by Habitat for Humanity International to encourage the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat homes. Crews of women volunteers have already built more than 1,000 Habitat for Humanity houses within the United States and they are now building in more than a dozen other countries.

The Women Build Program empowers women to build Habitat for Humanity homes, enabling them to positively impact the lives of children by making home ownership a reality for families. Lowe's is a partial sponsor for Women Build projects nation-wide. Want to learn more about the national initiative? Visit www.habitat.org/wb.

Previous Women Build Projects in Rochester

Women Build Week, 2009

In the days leading up to Mother's Day, crews of women volunteers were pounding nails and raising walls at more than 200 Habitat for Humanity construction sites across all 50 states. The pre-Mother's Day activities were part of Habitat's second annual National Women Build Week, sponsored by Lowe's.

Starting in fall of 2006, Rochester women joined together to create a fifth all-women-built Habitat home at a perfect location.. just ten doors down from the historic Susan B. Anthony house, home for 40 years to social reformer and women's rights campaigner Susan B. Anthony!

The home, built at 43 Madison Street, was the third women-built house in this historic Rochester neighborhood.

A steering committee of local women donated both time and talent to fundraising, publicity and volunteer recruitment.

Women Build 2003: A Legacy Begins

In the spring of 2002, FCHH invited the women of Rochester to help construct a new home in the Susan B. Anthony historic neighborhood. The famed social reformer and women's rights campaigner called this neighborhood her home for 40 years. This project, Flower City Habitat's fourth women-built home, commemorates the 150th anniversary of her involvement in the women's rights movement.

Construction of the 1,100 square foot home at 4 North Madison Park began in June 2002 and was completed in the late fall. Habitat homeowner Rita Alexander and her family moved in on December 1st.
